Rosh Hashanah is a two-day Jewish Celebration celebrated this year on September 4th through September 6th. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, “Head of the Year,” and as its name indicates, it is the beginning of the Jewish year. There are many traditions and rituals that take place during these few days and are important to the Jewish religion. It is customary for observers of this holiday to eat certain foods that are symbolic. An apple dipped in honey symbolizes a desire for a sweet year. And as with every major Jewish holiday, women and girls light candles on each evening of Rosh Hashanah and recite the Jewish blessing Leshanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim, “May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.”
